About the filmmaker
I was born Deaf and grew up using both language English and Auslan. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is my preferred language as it is the language of the Deaf and I use it to communicate with my family and friends. I also lip-read and written English to live in the hearing world.
I am an enthusiastic film-maker. I grew up watching films. My dad would take me to the cinemas and drive-ins. I was fascinated by the movies I saw and finally I got a video player when I was 13 years old. I watched many movies over and over again.
I started making films at the age of 17. My first film was called The Visitor (1994) which was made for my Communication Project at school. Ever since I made several more films, The D Files: Whodunit? (2004), When I Feel Bad... (2004) and Playmate to name a few. My first big project is probably The Sign (2004) which came 3rd in the Deaflympics Film Competition.
I have entered another film competition for ABC2's Video Lives. Unfortunately my film, Video Lives: Flowerdale (2005) wasn't successful but that didn't stop me. I went out and made another major film called Pieces (2006) a comedy/family film for Deaf kids and Who Killed the Interpreter (2008), as well as a couple of music video clip in Auslan, Do you get Excited? by Roxette and That Word L.O.V.E. by Rockmelons. Some of my films have entered in some Deaf Film Festivals around the world.
In 2013 my short film, Yassie, entered the 2nd Australian Deaf Short Film Festival and won two awards - Best Director and Best Film.
I've been working on Auslan Storybooks since 2012 with a mini break for two years from 2018 to 2020. Auslan Storybooks are now back with new stories.
In my other spare time, I enjoy working on DIY projects, gardening and relaxing in the country.
